The COOP

8/25/2020

Last year, Clea founded a new not-for-profit film production company, The COOP, alongside two other fierce women in the industry, Mara Alcaly and Andrus Nichols.

The COOP aims to bridge the gap between burgeoning artists and the funds necessary to create that first on-camera piece and is committed to collaboration, experimentation, and trust.

The production will reunite Guare and Zaks with the theater company that housed the premieres of Six Degrees of Separation and The House of Blue Leaves. With previews beginning February 21, 2019, and opening Monday, March 18, Nantucket Sleigh Ride will feature a cast of 10.
In addition to Larroquette, the cast will include Clea Alsip, Tina Benko, Adam Chanler-Berat, Jordan Gelber, Grace Rex, Stacey Sargeant, Douglas Sills and Will Swenson.
John Larroquette will star in Nantucket Sleigh Ride, a new play by John Guaredirected by Jerry Zaks and heading to Lincoln Center Theater’s Off Broadway Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater in February.
The play’s synopsis: “In his attempts to recover a memory of an event that happened on that ‘far away island’ 35 years before, Nantucket Sleigh Ride plunges a New York playwright-turned-venture capitalist (Larroquette) into a whirlpool of a giant lobster, Roman Polanski, a pornography ring, Walt Disney, a murder, stranded children, and Jorge Luis Borges, with the most unexpected results.”
The title is an old whaling term referring to sailors being dragged by harpooned whales for hours or days until the whale or sailors died.
The production will have sets by David Gallo, costumes by Emily Rebholz, lighting by Howell Binkley, and original music and sound by Mark Bennett.

Clea is thrilled to be making her Broadway Debut in the stunning new version of David Henry Hwang's M. Butterfly.  Directed by the incomparable Julie Taymor, the piece stars Clive Owen and Jin Ha, with Murray Bartlett, Michael Countryman, Enid Graham, and Celeste Den rounding out the cast.

A bit about the production:  "Owen will play a married French diplomat in China who carries on a 20-year affair with a mysterious Chinese opera singer—all without realizing that the singer is a man. Program notes describe the play as 'a remarkable love story of international espionage and personal betrayal. Their 20-year relationship pushed and blurred the boundaries between male and female, east and west—while redefining the nature of love and the devastating cost of deceit.'

Producers said the author will introduce 'new material inspired by the real-life love affair between French diplomat Bernard Boursicot and Chinese opera singer Shi Pei Pu that has come to light since the play’s 1988 premiere.'”

Clea had the extreme pleasure and thrill of going on for Amanda Seyfried in Neil LaBute's new play at Second Stage, THE WAY WE GET BY, opposite the incredible Thomas Sadoski.  She took over for a four days in June while Amanda popped overseas for some Ted 2 press.

Thank you to everyone who came for their immeasurable support and unbelievably kind words.  Clea is overwhelmed at the response.  Thank you.

Ping Pong at The Public

Clea recently began rehearsals for a new play, Ping Pong, over at The Public Theater. Written by Rogelio Martinez and Directed by Kate Whorisky.

A bit about the piece:
"Based on the true events surrounding the groundbreaking table tennis tournament that marked a decisive new chapter in US-China relations, PING PONG is the story of the extraordinary young man who played the game that changed the world and the political actors who were playing him.  With Nixon and Mao on either side of the court, free spirited hippie Glenn Cowan reaches across the net to usher in a fragile new friendship between two great countries in this funny, incisive and wildly imaginative new play about the little moments of history that set up the big ones. "

Mao, Nixon, and Dinah Shore are all characters, so it definitely promises to be a fun night in the theater.
